Model 2 was a thicker watch than the 16-size movements of the twentieth century. The model numbers were assigned in order to supply parts and this seems not to have been done until long after production ceased on the two models. The reason for the inversion is simple it was a mistake, or so it is believed.

The model 2 was built first and examples have lower serial numbers than those of the model 1. One area of confusion amongst novices is the numbering of the 16-size models 2 and 1. In pushing its line of 17-jewel watches, Hampden started a jewel count escalation that, over the next ten years, resulted in 21 and 23 jewel watches becoming commonplace and even led to the production of 24, 25 and 26 jewel watches. The operation continued in business, producing both movements and cases (and marketing them as complete watches) until falling sales in the mid-1920's led to receivership in 1927. They stayed two separate companies until about 1925 when the businesses were formally combined. That name was (and still is) in common usage. was a separate business from the Hampden Watch Co., although the ads continued to use the Dueber-Hampden name. In 1888-1889, both operations were moved to a dual, attached set of factory buildings in Canton, OH. of Springfield, MA to protect the case business from the actions of the developing Watch Trust. purchased a controlling interest in the Hampden Watch Co. In 1886 his Dueber Watch Case Manufacturing Co. Dueber established a watch case company in Cincinnati, OH in the 1860s, moving to Newport, KY (across the Ohio river from Cincinatti) in the 1874. Nearly 30 boxcars of machinery left Canton in 1931 with 21 former Dueber Hampden employees who contracted for one year to teach the Russians the craft of watchmaking. Vrettman went bankrupt in 1927 and sold all of the company's equipment to Amtorg, a Russian purchasing company. Dueber sold the company to Walter Vrettman in 1925.
